Assalāmu 'alaikum wa rahmatullāhi wa barakātuh
The Lagos State University Muslim Alumni (LASUMA) on Friday, 2nd of October 2026, paid a courtesy visit to His Royal Majesty, Oba Alayeluwa Saheed Ademola Elegushi, Kusenla III, the Elegushi of Ikate Kingdom, with discussions focusing on the Alumni’s forthcoming Annual General Meeting, students' scholarship, LASU Muslim Alumni Center and the ultramodern mosque project at Lagos State University.
The LASUMA delegation, led by its President, Dr. Abdulazeez Anjorin, was warmly received by the monarch in the royal kingdom.
Other members of the delegation were the General Secretary, Mr. Mushafau Ige; Public Relations Manager, Dr. Jamiu Yahya; Ex-officio I, Alh. Sulaimon Razak; Ex-officio II, Alh. Monsur Popoola; Chairman, Ramadan Committee, Alh. Agboluaje Kayode; and other LASUMA members- Bro. Jamiu AbdulRasak; and Hajia Adiat Salaudeen-Kukoyi.
Part of the purpose of the visit was to formally invite His Royal Majesty to the LASUMA 2026 Annual General Meeting, Awards & Scholarships ceremony themed “Islam, Peace and National Security: Correcting Misconceptions and Combating Violence in Nigeria” , scheduled for Sunday, 6 December 2026, at 11:00 a.m,
The event is expected to also feature LASUMA’s Awards of Excellence, Keynote Lecture and fundraising for LASUMA various projects.
During the visit, Prof (Assoc) Anjorin introduced members of the delegation and briefed the monarch on the history, objectives and activities of LASUMA. He explained the Alumni’s role in bringing together Muslim graduates of Lagos State University and its commitment to giving back to the institution while contributing to the academic, religious and socio-economic development of its members and the wider community. The President also highlighted LASUMA’s scholarship endowment initiative, which is designed to support indigent and deserving students of Lagos State University.
His Royal Majesty expressed his willingness to support scholarship initiative with a pledge particularly in assisting indigent students.
Dr. Anjorin further presented LASUMA’s five-year strategic plan, which sets out LASUMA’s long-term vision for institutional growth and sustainability. One of the major components of the plan is the proposed acquisition of hectares of land for the development of LASUMA permanent center.
According to the plan, the proposed facility is expected to provide space for hall, sports, health centre and other facilities, creating a permanent base for meetings, programmes and other activities, while also providing opportunities for investments and sustainable development.
Another major issue discussed was the LASU ₦600 million ultramodern mosque for the Muslim community.
The President explained the significance of the project and sought the support of Oba Elegushi towards its realisation. In response, His Royal Majesty pledged his support for the mosque project and also promised to speak with some of his friends and associates to encourage their support for the initiative.
The proposed mosque project and scholarship endowment are part of LASUMA’s broader commitment to supporting the Muslim community and contributing to the development of Lagos State University. LASUMA has previously implemented scholarship programmes through her prominent members for LASU students, including the award of ₦7 million in scholarships to 60 undergraduate and postgraduate students under its 2025 scholarship programme.
The courtesy visit therefore served both as an engagement with the traditional institution and an opportunity to seek strategic support for initiatives that LASUMA considers central to its vision for education, faith, community development and institutional sustainability.
The LASUMA delegation expressed appreciation to His Royal Majesty, Oba Alayeluwa Saheed Ademola Elegushi, Kusenla III, for the warm reception and his commitment to supporting the Alumni’s initiatives.
LASUMA looks forward to welcoming the monarch at its 2026 Annual General Assembly, Awards & Scholarships Presentation, while hoping that the partnership established through the visit will continue to grow in support of students, the university community and LASUMA's long-term development agenda.
