LASUMA MARKS LEADERSHIP TRANSITION WITH RENEWED COMMITMENT TO INSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENT



The Lagos State University Muslim Alumni (LASUMA) formally ushered in a new leadership era on Saturday, July 11, 2026, when it held its 2026 Transition and Handing-Over Ceremony at the ACEITSE Hall, beside the Faculty of Social Sciences, Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo. Themed “Strengthening Bonds and Sustaining Vision: The Future of Alumni Associations,” the ceremony brought together members, university officials, religious leaders and distinguished alumni to reflect on the association’s achievements while charting a bold course for its future.

The event commenced on a solemn note with an opening du’a led by the Chief Imam of LASU, Prof. Kudus Amuni, followed by the recitation of verses from the Holy Qur’an. Guests and dignitaries were subsequently recognised before, Assoc. Prof. Abdul-Azeez Adeyemi Anjorin, delivered his welcome address.

In his remarks, Assoc. Prof. Anjorin reflected on the journey of the association over the last two years, describing the period as one of growth, unity and purposeful service. Presenting the outgoing Executive Council’s report, he highlighted notable achievements, including significant expansion in membership, increased scholarship support for indigent students, stronger collaborations with the Lagos State University management, and strategic partnerships with government agencies and other stakeholders.

He urged members to remain united behind the ideals of the association, noting that sustainable development can only be achieved through collective commitment, transparency and selfless service. According to him, the progress recorded by LASUMA was made possible through teamwork, dedication and the unwavering support of members at home and in the diaspora.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Assoc. Prof. Fatai Yakeen, commended the outgoing executives for laying a solid foundation for future administrations. He encouraged the incoming leadership to preserve the association’s core values while embracing innovative ideas that would strengthen LASUMA’s relevance within the university and the wider society. He also charged members to continue promoting unity, professionalism and accountability in all aspects of the association’s activities.

A major highlight of the ceremony was the keynote lecture delivered by Prof. Jamiu Oluwatoki of the Department of History and International Studies, Lagos State University.

Speaking on the conference theme, Prof. Oluwatoki challenged alumni associations to redefine their roles beyond organising reunions and ceremonial gatherings. According to him, alumni bodies should become active partners in institutional development, policy advocacy and nation-building.

He described alumni associations as custodians of institutional memory and catalysts for innovation, explaining that some of the world’s most successful universities continue to thrive because of the unwavering commitment of their alumni. Drawing from historical examples, he demonstrated how organised alumni movements have influenced educational reforms, funded landmark infrastructure, supported research and created opportunities for future generations of students.

Prof. Oluwatoki further encouraged LASUMA members to deepen their commitment to mentorship, philanthropy and advocacy. He noted that alumni possess the experience, professional networks and resources needed to support indigent students, promote academic excellence and contribute meaningfully to the moral and intellectual development of society.

He also stressed that a vibrant alumni association should remain actively involved in shaping public discourse on education while partnering with universities to address emerging challenges. He urged members to see themselves not merely as beneficiaries of the institution but as stakeholders with a responsibility to contribute to its continuous growth and global competitiveness. His thought-provoking presentation resonated strongly with participants, who applauded his call for alumni engagement driven by responsibility, vision and long-term impact.

Another important aspect of the programme was the presentation of the report of the Shurah Chairman Committee, Dr. Salman Yunus, which formally introduced the Executive Council that will pilot the affairs of LASUMA for the 2026–2028 tenure.

As part of the transition ceremony, certificates of appreciation were presented to members of the outgoing Executive Council in recognition of their dedication, sacrifices and invaluable service to the association.

Delivering his acceptance speech, the incoming President pledged to consolidate the achievements of previous administrations through inclusive leadership, stronger member engagement and programmes that would further enhance LASUMA’s impact within Lagos State University and beyond. He assured members that his administration would focus on sustaining the association’s developmental agenda while expanding opportunities for alumni participation, youth engagement, scholarship support and community service.

The newly ratified LASUMA Executive Council Members 2026-2028 comprises:

1. President: Dr. Abdul-Azeez Anjorin (PhD), Associate Professor of Microbiology/ Medical Virology, LASU, & Founder/ Principal Investigator, AFIDMURG.
2. Vice President I: Alh. Abdul-Lateef Onibudo, Outgoing VP I, LASUMA, and Former Security Expert with Total Nigeria.
3. Vice President II: Barr. Musodiq Sanni, Renowned Lawyer & Former, Chairman, Muslim Lawyers Association of Nigeria (MULAN), Lagos State.
4. General Secretary: Mr Mushafau Ige, Principal Assistant Registrar, LASU.
5. Assistant General Secretary: Habeeb Adepoju, Presenter, Galaxy TV Media show.
6. Public Relations Manager I: Dr Yahya Jamiu (PhD), Manager, LASU Radio.

The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Alhaji Abdul-Lateef Onibudo, Chairman of the Transition Planning Committee, who appreciated the Board of Trustees, resource persons, invited guests, members and volunteers for contributing to the success of the programme. He described the smooth transition as another demonstration of LASUMA’s commitment to democratic ideals, unity and continuity. Closing prayers were offered before participants gathered for group photographs.

Reflecting on the association’s recent progress, LASUMA announced that its membership had grown remarkably from about 200 members in 2024 to over 1,800 members in 2026. Scholarship support also witnessed a significant increase, rising from ₦1 million in 2024 to ₦7 million in 2025, while the association strengthened strategic relationships with the university management and relevant government agencies.

In a goodwill message, Prof. Babatunde Ramon Yusuf highlighted the remarkable growth and development of the Lagos State University Muslim Community (LASUMC), describing its achievements as the result of visionary leadership, prudent management and the unwavering commitment of members over the years.

He noted that the Muslim community has continued to strengthen its financial base through strategic investments, particularly the establishment of the LASU Muslim Guest House, which has become a dependable source of internally generated revenue for the community. According to him, the success of the investment has encouraged the leadership to begin considering an expansion of the guest house to increase its accommodation capacity and generate more revenue to support developmental projects and welfare programmes.

Prof. Yusuf expressed profound appreciation to members of staff of Lagos State University for their consistency in making monthly financial contributions towards the growth and development of the LASU Muslim Community. He described their commitment as a demonstration of shared responsibility and collective ownership, noting that their support has contributed immensely to the successful execution of several community initiatives.

He further spoke on the proposed ₦600 million LASU Ultra-Modern Mosque Project, describing it as one of the most significant legacy projects currently being pursued by the Muslim community. According to him, the mosque is envisioned not only as a befitting place of worship but also as a centre for Islamic scholarship, community engagement, leadership development and spiritual growth. He appealed to members, alumni, philanthropists and friends of the university to continue supporting the project financially and through strategic partnerships, expressing optimism that the collective commitment of stakeholders would ensure its successful completion.

The association equally reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the ₦600 million LASU Ultra-Modern Mosque Project, describing the initiative as one that will benefit generations of students, staff, alumni and the wider Muslim community.

As members celebrated another peaceful transition of leadership, the ceremony served not only as the end of one administration but also as the beginning of a new chapter in LASUMA’s history. With renewed purpose, strengthened unity and an unwavering commitment to service, the association expressed confidence that the incoming Executive Council would build on existing achievements, deepen alumni engagement and contribute even more meaningfully to the development of Lagos State University and the wider society.
